Grant Support Program

In-Depth Workshops

This program is timed to match the NHMRC Investigator Grant, but is designed to teach you how to use Design Thinking to prepare for a wide range of fellowship grants across various schemes.

This pilot program will have a maximum of eight participants in each workshop group to ensure everyone has the opportunity to participate fully. It will be led by an expert facilitator and supported by a senior researcher from the precinct with significant experience in writing and reviewing grants. The purpose of the program is to provide robust, structured, and constructive feedback to aid participants in developing their grant proposals.

Throughout September- October (2023),

  1. An online Introduction and Meet and Greet.

  2. Five 2-hour workshops with a grant expert and senior researcher where you will go through activities to build your skills around grant writing.

This program is normally valued at $1000 per applicant is completely free for participating researchers.

Places are limited. Please apply only if you have capacity to complete all workshops (see program requirements below).

Open to:

  • Women and non-binary people who are planning to submit an NMHRC Investigator Grant, either in current or future rounds.

Priority to:

  • Researchers from WiSPP member institutes.

  • Those committed to submitting in the grant round immediately following the workshops.

TIME COMMITMENT

Program involvement includes:

  • 1.5 hour introduction session.

  • 5 X 2 hour interactive workshops (see timetable below).

  • Grant development work in-between sessions.

  • Voluntary grant writing support sessions with other participants (buddies program).

We aspire to empower women and non-binary researchers to participate and ultimately succeed in the research grant system by building their capabilities and providing them the tools to build a better grant.

This program is normally valued at $1000 per applicant is completely free for researchers from WiSPP institutes.

Meet our Experts: Professor Flavia Marcello

Flavia, an esteemed expert on Italian Fascist architecture and cultural production, joined Swinburne in 2013 from a diverse teaching background. Her research covers areas such as exhibitions, architectural ephemera, spatial practice, and the relationship between architecture and urban space. Flavia's book, 'Giuseppe Pagano. Design for Social Change in Fascist Italy' has been published by Intellect Press, and she's actively involved in teaching design, history, theory, and conducting action research to enhance health outcomes. She leads writing workshops, collaborates with Simone Taffe, and contributes to the Career Development team within SWAN (Swinburne Women's Academic Network).

Dr Winnie Tan

Dr Winnie Tan (BSc, PhD) is a Research Officer employed at the WEHI Structural Biology Division. She currently leads a Charcot-Marie-Tooth Australia (2022-2024) research program that utilizes cutting edge structural biology and biochemical techniques to study the role of chromatin remodeling complex in prevention of neuromuscular disorder and cancer. She is a postdoc representative of the Gender Equity Group at WEHI and is passionate about empowering women in science.
